Where do you live?

Rural Oklahoma City

What inspired you to become a Counselor?

I would characterize myself as a very depressed adolescent and I didn't feel that anyone cared about me. So, I determined that I would be there and be interested in adolescents like me. I really like and appreciate teenagers. Many have to be their own parent as well as trying to figure themselves out. I want to encourage all students to realize their full potential for themselves because every person is valuable.

What do you think makes Oklahoma Virtual High School special?

It is a unique opportunity to get a high quality education without having to go to a brick and mortar building with crowded halls and packed classrooms. Too, traditional school seems to put everyone in a cookie cutter mold. OKVHS allows a student to make their own decisions about what subject to focus on at any given time and at what pace as long as they keep up with their calendar.

What do you like to do when you're not working at OKVHS?

I am very involved with my church and do some private counseling when called upon. I like to put jigsaw puzzles together and play Free Cell on the computer. I also love music of all kinds; some of my favorites are classic rock like Led Zepplin, Doors, and Jimi Hendrix; Beatles; Rascal Flatts and Carrie Underwood; Celine Dion and Michael Buble'.

What are you proud of?

My children! I have a daughter, Bonnie. She and her husband will have my first grandson, Elijah, this summer. Bonnie will be a stay-at-home mom. She has a law degree and likes to write novels. I also have a son, Rick. He and his wife are also going to give me a grandbaby in January. He is a Manager at Buffalo Wild Wings. He's been in the restaurant business since he was in high school. He's good at it.

As for myself, I have a Bachelors Degree in Psychology from Oklahoma Christian University of Science and Arts with a Math Education Minor. I taught middle school and high school math for 15 years before getting my Masters Degree in Guidance and Counseling from University of Central Oklahoma. I have been a high school counselor for 12 years. I also have my License Professional Counselor credentials from the State of Oklahoma which enables me to do private counseling. But, my first love is working with high school people.
